Submissions will close on December 6th for this volume. If you submitted to Volume 20, we encourage you to submit to 21 as well.

Thread Magazine is the University of South Florida's online and print undergraduate literary and arts journal, run by students for students, dedicated to showcasing the diverse voices of the USF undergraduate community.

Our volumes are published twice annually, once in the winter, and once in the spring. We will send out decisions for Volume 21 by January 10th. This Fall we will also be releasing a special edition magazine "The Occult Edition". 

Before sending in your work, we kindly ask you to review our submission guidelines carefully, which can be found on our website. Submissions that fail to follow guidelines will unfortunately not be accepted.

Terms & Conditions:

By submitting to our print magazine, you are agreeing to allow your work to be subjected to minor editing (line level/grammar) upon acceptance if needed. We retain First Serial Rights, meaning your work must be previously unpublished and not have appeared in its entirety online or in print in another publication, but personal social media/blogs are fine. All rights revert back to you after publication. We kindly ask that if your work is republished elsewhere that it is credited as having first appeared in Thread Magazine. We retain nonexclusive archival rights, meaning your work can be found on our website indefinitely.

Welcome to the world of weird! 

Explore the supernatural, science fiction, unnerving, and uncanny through fiction, poetry, prose, art, and music. 

Fiction/Comics/Screenplays: Submit no more than two (2) fiction pieces not exceeding 10 pages each. Submit only one (1) piece per submission. We consider micro fiction, flash fiction, short stories, and hybrid/experimental work. Please double-space fiction using 12 pt. Times New Roman font, uploaded as a Word document. Include your name and the title of your piece at the beginning of the document.

Poetry: Submit no more than four (4) poems not exceeding 2 pages each. Submit only one (1) piece per submission. We consider all types of poetry, including but not limited to form, free-verse, prose, and hybrid/experimental poetry. Please single-space all poems using 12 pt. Times New Roman font, uploaded as a Word document. If your poem undertakes a specific form/line structure, you may include a PDF version of it IN ADDITION TO the Word document version to ensure it is viewed as intended. Please include your name and the title of your piece at the beginning of the document.

Creative NF: Submit no more than two (2) creative nonfiction pieces not exceeding 10 pages each. Submit only one (1) piece per submission.Personal essays/narratives only please – we do not accept academic writing of any kind.  Please double-space all CNF submissions using 12 pt. Times New Roman font, uploaded as a Word document. Please include your name and the title of your piece at the beginning of the document.

Art/Photography: Submit no more than four (4) art pieces or photographs. Submit only one (1) piece per submission. All art/photography submissions must be accompanied by a written artist statement of 500 words or less, uploaded as a Word document in addition to your image. If accepted, your artist statement will accompany your work in the online version of the magazine. Please include your name and the title of your piece at the beginning of your artist statement.

Submit no more than two (2) comics, not exceeding 2-3pages each. Submit only one (1) piece per submission. Please ensure your name and the title is integrated into the first page of your comic. Ensure your comic is legible.

Submit no more than two (2) music pieces, not exceeding 5 minutes in duration each. Submit only one (1) piece per submission.

Songs with sung words should be accompanied by lyrics. Instrumentals should be accompanied by sheet music.

Please single-space lyrics using 12 pt. Times New Roman font, and put your name and the title of your song at the top of the document.
